Ray I. Powell, Jr.

Born October 18, 1928 in Redwood, Mississippi to Ray I. Powell and Bertha Logan Powell. He graduated school in Vicksburg, Mississippi and worked in a local bakery. He married Elinor Lee Holyfield, his sweetheart of five years, on February 16, 1949. Ray joined the United States Air Force in 1950 and was stationed at many bases stateside, as well as Thailand, Newfoundland and England. He retired in 1972 at Nellis AFB Las Vegas, Nevada. He bought a grocery store/gas station in Doyline, Louisiana in 1973 and ran it with his family until 2017.  Ray was a member of the Lions Club, and the Gideon’s where he held several offices, a member of Cross Bayou Emmaus. His hobbies were fishing and golf.

He is survived by his four sons David Ray (Ruby), James Kevin (Sandra), Richard Mark (Vanessa), and Gary Scott (Amie), eleven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, one great great-grandson, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Ray I. Powell, Sr. and Bertha Powell Guidry, step father Joseph Guidry, wife of 71 years Elinor Lee Holyfield Powell, and his sister Cletus Arnold Haded (John Hadad, Jr.).

A private graveside service will be held Saturday, April 11, 2020 at Point Chapel Cemetery in Doyline, Louisiana.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Doyline United Methodist Church, The Gideon’s, or donor’s choice.
