City of Minden Gets Clarification on Vacant Council Seat

Written by on May 4, 2020

The City of Minden has received clarification from Governor Edwards regarding the recent appointment, then rescinding of Wayne Edwards as the District A interim Councilman. According to a letter sent to Minden Mayor Terry Gardner addressed April 30th, the appointment made by the Governor was rescinded because he actually lacks authority to do so under existing emergency declarations.

According to the letter, the Governor’s authority to make an appointment after the 20 day deadline for the council to appoint is suspended as a result of the emergency declarations. As a result, Governor Edwards has returned the issue of filling the seat to the Minden City Council. If the council fails to appoint a interim to the seat, once emergency orders are lifted, the 20 day deadline begins.

The item was added to the agenda on Friday. The City Council is scheduled to meet tonight at 5:30 pm.
